Here’s why this palette works for me. This is a ve Here’s why this palette works for me. This is a very tonal selection which looks muted and soft yet strong - my favourite type of palette.

Shading - how light or dark a colour is.
All colours are of roughly equal increasing proportion from the darkest, grey, to the lightest, pink.

Chroma - how intense a colour is.
The three colours grey, lavender and pale pink are of roughly equal saturation, whereas the blue has a higher saturation and the coral even more, adding a subtle pop to help the eye land.

Tonality - how grey a colour is.
The grey is already a tonal colour but it is the lavender that has the highest tone added. The two colours of blue and pale pink have similar amounts of grey added and the coral has the least which, again, helps that pop.

From the top down, the grey is a warm shadow to the blue, the lavender is a cool shadow to the coral and the coral is a warm shadow to the pink.

Colour formula:
1 light, 1 dark and 3 in-between of equal ascending shades
The lightest and second darkest colour with similar tonal value added
The second lightest colour with the most chroma and least grey for a pop
The mid-shade colour with the highest tonal (grey) value
The second darkest colour with more chroma but less than the pop colour

How would you mix your favourite colours to this formula? What pattern design would you make?

Part 1: Taking the pink out of plaster pink. It’s Part 1: Taking the pink out of plaster pink.

It’s unbelievable that a year ago this week I was documenting the renovation of my house. So much has since happened in the year that has passed! I found a load of videos whilst scrolling through my gallery that I almost forgot about. I had wanted at the time to demonstrate the process of thinking about colour and light and aspect and the feeling of a space, and how I reached my decisions. I’m hoping over the next few days to manage to edit these (🤓) to show my diarised process of choosing between subtle differences in the gorgeous colours @argileuk . Rooms are unfinished, the process is unfolding, and those who have since visited for my workshop will recognise the changes and references to the narrative process that I speak about on my Aesthetic Narrative hands-on workshop here. Oh, and look out for the reindeer - the gesture I managed to find space for to remind me it was Xmas, which might explain this year’s magnificent tree 🌲😁

🎨 If you’re interested in attending a workshop next year to see, hear and learn about the process, head over to my website for details and booking - link in bio.
