I COMPLETELY fell in love with this event last yea I COMPLETELY fell in love with this event last year - the Barnet Medieval Festival. I felt with the eyes and saw with the heart. I couldn’t soak enough up. Being transported back in time to the old ways was utterly immersive. I felt every part of it. Maybe, subconsciously, this is where the seed was planted for the very first immersive colour and styling experience I ran at Lantern Cottage last August.

The enactment of dedicated groups, who live, work, and play as medievals is about as authentic as it gets. Stunning tents with ancient beds, magnificent costumes and shoes, pigments for dyes and medicine and a touch of magic for sorcery, pottery, ceramics and herbs for cooking, and tools for working, combat or making.

I recall swooning over the make-shift kitchens, and wooden spoons and glazed vessels. And I remember thinking how beautifully simple, primitive and honest everything looked and felt to the eye and hand.

I’ll be returning this year, and this time I’ll be delving deeper with finding out more about how colour featured in the medieval era, and seeing what I can bring back…

Have you ever considered how a garden can inform y Have you ever considered how a garden can inform your narrative, and feed your soul?

For many years, I have admired monastic gardens for their simplicity, use of a herbal system, and usually for the architecture and muted landscape of their place. Reflecting on my cottage garden as we enter the summer, I can see the influence of this and different lifetimes, and am reminded of the power of intention.

My garden has grown over the years through minimum planning, jobs done as and when could be, and mostly through recycled or foraged-and-found items. It’s higgledypickeldy with layers and zones with multi-purpose use and enjoyment. It leads off my dining room, inspired by a monastery that I love to visit, and draws me through a tonal palette of raw pigments and natural materials, and green.

I’ve sweated and worked hard. Very hard. But I can now sit under the shade of the pergola and vines and watch the linen in the breeze, or potter by the ‘garden kitchen’ which reminds me of rustic living in ancestral Laggo Maggiore; I can water the growing potatoes and veg as I once used to with my mother and eat the odd home-grown meal, and crush herbs in my hand as I walk past them - herbs have been my constant.

I didn’t plan my garden. I couldn’t. But I did hold a strong vision of how to feel as though in Italy. Somewhere restorative and peaceful - a sanctuary. Between fragmented memories of the past, and the present, my garden seems to have evolved to mirror that intention, and become a gateway to a magical place where I dip in and out of, like the sea.

Hand painted birds, blossom and wisteria on black Hand painted birds, blossom and wisteria on black silk panels. Aging and fraying but beautiful. Bought about 15 years ago, before my move to Lantern Cottage, and here I now share my gardens with green parakeets, wisteria and blooms of blossom.
