You might have already seen this fabulous stripe combination @coloursofarley today but I have to be say … WOW 🤩. I am loving this colour pairing of flamingo and rust. This is a perfect colour and shadow duo and you only have to swipe and see a fine example in the protea painting by Karen Whitworth to see what I mean. Those shadow colours are warmer and deeper, becoming a little more red-orange in parts. What a brilliant stripe, Louise! ❤️🩷 🦩

A #colourpalette I adore of #green , #orange and #pinkyred . A little shelving box in my #bathroom decorated with sea urchins that remind me of early childhood years diving for these in #sardegna . In a room lit by candlelight in the evening, the shadows and colours dance about and it all feels like a moment of #stilllife_perfection and very much #myhomevibe in #mycottage . A fleeting moment captured in a #photograph like this can lead to #creativeinspiration for an entire #colourscheme #athome . A great example of shadow and highlight - the rationale and method I use to make many of my colours decisions. The first colour is the original, the second is with a yellow warm light from a wall light hitting the paint surface. The third colour is the return wall at 90 degrees facing a cool light from the window - see how the warmth disappears and a cooler hue appears - followed by a deeper shade as the natural light vanishes. The final colour is the return wall, again facing the warm yellow light as colour no. 2 but, this time, at a recessed darker area where the interpretation is a deeper and slightly cooler hue presenting more green. This is how to bend colour for harmonic schemes. Imagine colour 2 for walls with colour 5 for woodwork 😍🔥😎

Understanding how to introduce colours with strong

Understanding how to introduce colours with strong pigment into a scheme can be a tricky challenge. On the one hand, they are bright and obvious. They are rich in chroma. This can make walls or cabinetry jump out. On the other hand, they are sumptuous, rich or bold, often making a space a statement.

When I’m working with paint and fabric colour schemes, I find a good starting point is to settle with a calm obvious scheme based on colours in a pattern or fabric . Then, depending on the direction I’m taking the scheme in - whether that is warm shadow or cool shadow - I then ‘push forward’ those chromatic values to reach colours that are not necessarily in the original fabric, yet work well with it because of the relationship between the colours. To soften the scheme, introduce fabrics or patterns that contain colours in the original selection you began with.

In this demonstration for @designcentrech @casamance_official and @argileuk for Focus/24, you can see the the softer coloir-matched palette on the left, and the bolder palette of warm shadow colours to the right, with a piece of wallpaper in the same colour as the original counterpart (photo resolution doesn’t quite show this). Navigating colour this way enables you to confidentially select where to place those colour pops and statement features that not obvious yet harmoniously work, without the need to flick through dozens and dozens of options!

It’s been a long time in the waiting but timing

It’s been a long time in the waiting but timing is everything and it was just what I needed for the day…

I often find it difficult to #slowdown ; my mind if not my body is racing around with things to do and things to think about. Time flies. This whole year has flown by for me and yet, when I think about the many wonderful #creatives , opportunities, travels and events that I have been involved with through #mywork , I see that there must have been time for everything to all fit in. This birthday I wanted to simply stop still. And to travel to my favourite places. Familiar, comforting places like the #visuallypoetic , #stilllife_perfection #wabisabiinteriors , #decayingbeauty , #moodylight , #shadows , mystery, layers of meaning and whispered stories, a #scentedjourney , detail and #colourfulinteriors , of course.

I couldn’t have hoped for more in London than @dennissevershouse . A breathtaking world to fall into, so full of wonderment,and history, an extraordinarily enchanting portal into time, decadence, poverty, the simple pleasures in life and the extravagant; layers of the dull and worn and the colourful and creative. Gliding like ghosts of the present, strangers pass one another in silence, in and out of rooms, just the tic-toc of the clock to be heard or the creaking of floor boards.

How I wish I could have captured the details that grabbed me the most to share but, rightfully so, no photography is allowed. I left the house bedazzled and lifted, a hazy trail of fireplace smoke waving goodbye as the door closed behind me. It’s the #festiveseason at the house…and there’s plenty #christmasspirit for those who want to feel it.

What an honour being invited to participate in the last Autumn edit panel discussion for @chelseadesignquarter today with @countryandtownhouse . A thoroughly interesting and enjoyable event exploring #colourandtexture by bringing together different #design elements for creating #beautifulbathrooms with #bathroomfittings @westonebathrooms , #tiles @reedharristiles and extraordinarily mesmerising #marbledpaper @natmaks . With mini display examples, I was able to demonstrate how to incorporate #paintcolour @argileuk in naturally harmonious yet unobvious ways from their palette of beguiling #hues whilst Irene @gunterandco spoke about ideas and challenges in #interiordesignprojects . Thank you to everyone for a collaboration that left us all feeling uplifted and inspired. 🍂🤎

Some Sunday inspo….
The colours in achingly beautiful #floraldesign and #floralartwork often lingers in the background of my #colourworld . As a former florist in my earlier years, my relationship with colour and form no doubt began in the garden as a child. The ebb and flow of #chroma and #decayingbeauty began here. The rise and fall of #scenicbeauty and #wabisabistyle began here. And so when I see #floralarrangements that celebrate the magic of nature’s #colourpalette I am drawn to observing the #chiaroscuro of the folds and #shadow, the highlights and the illuminated; or the #translucency of old #petals and #dyingflowers such as in the stunning camerawork @kreettakreetta .
